Shere Hite suggested that women were more successful with clitoral stimulation when alone (82% of her sample) than with a partner because stimulation during sex is never continued for long enough i.e. up to the point of orgasm. The inference is that either men are too selfish/lazy to provide or women too timid to ask for sufficient stimulation for orgasm.

Not only do I think this unlikely but Kinsey noted that women only need an average of 4 minutes to orgasm alone. No one considers the very different psychological contexts for sex and masturbation alone. My suggestion is that women’s use of fantasy cannot be transferred to sex.
